What Is Green Globes

Introduction of Green Globes

Green Globes (GG) is a voluntary, third-party environmental rating system for buildings and communities. It is a comprehensive tool that helps owners, developers, and managers reduce environmental impacts, save energy and water, and improve occupant health and well-being.

The GG rating system is based on a set of performance criteria that are aligned with the International Green Construction Code (IgCC). The IgCC is a model code that provides a comprehensive set of building design and construction requirements for energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor air quality, and sustainable site development.

GG is a flexible rating system that can be applied to a wide range of building types, including commercial, institutional, and residential buildings. The rating system is also scalable, so it can be used to assess the environmental performance of both new and existing buildings.

Green Globes Criteria

The GG Certification Standard encompasses 44 criteria organized into four groups and is backed by over 380 compliance indicators. These criteria are tailored to different types of certification, geographical regions, and local circumstances. Developed over a span of three decades, this standard ensures the utmost level of sustainable practices and management. The most recent iteration, the Green Globe Standard for Sustainable Travel & Tourism Version 1.7, incorporates criteria specifically addressing the challenges posed by COVID-19. This includes measures to ensure the health and safety of staff, as well as the well-being of guests and customers.

  • Sustainable Management – This theme covers the management of the building or community, including energy and water use, waste management, and indoor air quality.
  • Social/Economic – This theme covers the social and economic impacts of the building or community, including job creation, community engagement, and economic development.
  • Cultural Heritage – This theme covers the cultural heritage of the building or community, including the preservation of historic buildings and the integration of new buildings into the surrounding environment.
  • Environment – This theme covers the environmental impacts of the building or community, including air quality, water quality, and waste management.

Each criterion is assigned a weight, and the total score for a building or community is calculated by multiplying the weight of each criterion by the number of points achieved for that criterion.
